Birtley Community Centre is at the heart of the Birtley community, situated between Elisabethville and Station Lane. We provide a welcoming and inclusive space for people of all ages, from birth through to senior age.
We offer a wide range of activities, groups and services, including those led by the Centre, local businesses, volunteers and community organisations. This collaborative approach allows us to continually introduce new opportunities and experiences for local residents.
We are particularly passionate about bringing activities and services into the community that may otherwise be difficult for local people to access. By providing these opportunities in a familiar, accessible and welcoming environment, we aim to ensure that everyone in our community has the chance to participate, connect with others and try something new.
Alongside our dedicated team of staff, Birtley Community Centre is incredibly fortunate to have the support of a fantastic team of volunteers. Our activities, clubs, events and community initiatives are heavily supported by volunteers who give their time, energy and commitment to help make a real difference to the people of Birtley.
At the heart of everything we do is the welfare and wellbeing of our community. One of our greatest achievements is seeing the positive impact we can have on the lives of people who have turned to us during some of their most difficult and challenging times.
With the ongoing cost-of-living pressures, we recognise that many individuals and families may face difficult choices in the months ahead. Birtley Community Centre is ready, as it has always been, to support our community wherever we can. We will continue to listen, respond and work alongside local people to ensure that those who need help know that they are not alone.
Our key areas of focus include:

Tackling food poverty – helping people and families access food and essential support when they need it most.

Tackling hygiene poverty – supporting those who may struggle to afford essential hygiene and personal care products.

Signposting to the right support – helping people navigate the services and organisations available to them and connecting them with appropriate sources of advice and assistance.

Providing activities and opportunities for younger people – creating safe, welcoming and positive spaces where children and young people can take part, build confidence, develop skills and connect with others.

Breaking down stigma around mental health and asking for help – creating an environment where people feel comfortable talking about their experiences and seeking support without fear of judgement.

Creating a safe, inclusive and welcoming community – ensuring that everyone who comes through our doors feels valued, respected, included and, most importantly, heard.
We believe that asking for help should never be something to be ashamed of. Birtley Community Centre will continue to be a place where people can come as they are, find support when they need it, and feel part of a community that genuinely cares.
